Hey Aggies!

I'm Kylie Rice, a hard working junior honors student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I study Political Science with a minor in Journalism and Mass Communication and am grateful to be 1 of 20 Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholars from the 2021 cohort. I've been passionate about getting involved in campus life and the community since day one!

SGA

Student Government Association

I'm currently serving as the Attorney General on the Student Government Association Executive Board. It's been an incredible honor to be a part of this administration, where I get to actively participate in shaping the university's governance and policies, advocating for the needs and concerns of my fellow students, and advising the security of our campus. After being an active member of the Student Government Association for three years, I'm ready to take on even more responsibility and serve as President. I'm excited about the opportunity to implement positive changes based on the valuable feedback I've received over the years.

OLCE

Office of Leadership & Civic Engagment

Moreover, I am a Civic Fellow within the Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement, where I further my commitment to civic responsibility and community engagement. I am proud to have been recognized by the University for my political engagement, a testament to my dedication to making a difference.

AKA

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated

In the Alpha Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I currently serve as chair of the Advocate for Social Justice Committee. In the position, I have effectively implemented programs such as “Stay Woke” and “Check and Balances,” which increased student knowledge of current social issues while also providing practical ways to address concerns rooted in advocacy. In addition to organizing and hosting such programs, I registered over 300 students to vote during these programs, tackling the necessity of being informed and registered voters.

What’s Next?

In the future, I plan to attend law school and pursue a Juris Doctorate. My ultimate goal is to become a civil rights attorney, driven by my passion for justice and equality. I truly believe that I can use my legal knowledge and skills to advocate for positive change in society.

Why

Why

Life is an exciting journey that we are all a part of, whether we chose to be or not. Inspired by my previous three Student Government Association themes, which were all about games, I decided to keep the fun going by incorporating elements from each of them. As a child, I enjoyed playing board games like Life, where I had to make tough decisions and rely on luck to succeed.

Choosing a career path and finding a life partner were the thrilling highlights of each round. As I reflect on this, I realize that the crucial decision of whether to pursue higher education or dive straight into the workforce is just like the first section of Life’s game board. By choosing college, we are diving headfirst into the game of life and making our very first big move. So, are you ready to play the ultimate game - the game of LIFE?

Share the ballot

We stand on the shoulders of giants, its only right that we activate the vote! I plan to:

  • Highlight voting at the campus polling site and voter education initiatives
  • Provide daily voter registration opportunities
  • Utilize infographics to simplify complex social issues
  • Enhance understanding of civic engagement through the Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement (OLCE)
  • Assist in organizing HBCU Voter Registration and GOTV Competition
  • Develop a strategic plan for addressing the 2024 Presidential Elections

Career

We all came here to get a job right?! Let’s talk about Aggies to employment. I plan to:

  • Establish partnerships with Fortune 500 Companies
  • Showcase existing routes to graduate studies
  • Expand tabling efforts in colleges providing on-site internships
  • Host an inaugural mixer of Aggie Alum/parents, spotlighting their careers and companies while outlining opportunities for HBCU students

House

Have you ever been told by your mom to "Keep that door open"? Well, I intend to take note of my mom's advice and maintain transparency in leading this administration. It's crucial for the people to always be informed. I plan to:

  • Keep up with monthly Instagram summaries from the administration
  • Establish both in-person and Zoom office hours for accessibility
  • Publish public meeting notes after Executive board meetings
  • Livestream Executive board meetings for broader engagement
  • Develop a calendar of events on @ncatsga

Long Term investment

It’s not always about us, it’s about those who come after us. This section is dedicated for the next Aggies. I plan to:

  • Sustain discussions on securing student discounts at local establishments
  • Establish mental health days as a permanent fixture
  • Enhance the GTA route based on student feedback
  • Extend 24-hour access to the first floor of the library
  • Introduce "Aggie Market," an event for student entrepreneurs

Embrace Self Care

Stay Ahead

Avoid Overextension

Breaks are breaks! Allow yourself designated breaks to recharge and rejuvenate. Whether it's a leisurely walk, meditation, or indulging in a favorite hobby, self-care is necessary for maintaining balance.

Try to complete tasks and assignments in advance whenever possible, especially when there’s a party and an 11:59 deadline. This proactive approach can alleviate the pressure of deadlines and provide flexibility in managing your workload.

Recognize your limits and refrain from spreading yourself too thin. Learn to delegate tasks or decline additional responsibilities to maintain a manageable workload. It’s okay to say no!

Explore your Passions

Leverage Campus Resources

Establish A Routine

College is an ideal time to discover and pursue your interests. Engage in extracurricular activities, join clubs, or enroll in courses that align with your passions to cultivate a fulfilling college experience. I always advise freshman to join three organizations one for service, your hometown, and major.

Take advantage of the support services available on campus, such as Murphy Hall or academic advising centers. Transparently, I’ve used both! These resources can provide guidance, assistance, and support when needed.

Create a structured schedule that incorporates dedicated time for studying, relaxation, and personal activities. Consistency fosters productivity and helps maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal life.

Put Yourself First

Prioritize your well-being by making decisions that prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional health. Remember that self-care is not selfish—it's essential for your overall success and happiness in college.

If you want to make the most out of your college experience, it's important to have some strategies in place to manage your responsibilities and overcome challenges. However, you should always remember to take it easy on yourself and not be too hard on yourself. If you ever need any support, don't hesitate to reach out for help.

Keep Your Mental Strong

Keep Your Mental Strong

College life can be overwhelming at times, but it's crucial to take care of your mental health while juggling all the responsibilities that come your way. To make things easier for you, I've put together some useful tips that are specifically tailored to the college experience.

What makes me unique?

I believe that passion is what sets apart those who achieve their goals from those who just dream about them. That's why I've worked tirelessly to develop a strong passion for what I do, which drives me to always strive for excellence. My experience speaks volumes of my dedication and skills in the field. I bring both passion and expertise to the table, making me a great fit for the role. Moreover, I'm genuinely eager to listen and understand your needs, ensuring that I can meet them effectively.

Advocacy is something that truly speaks to my heart, and it's also at the core of SGA's mission. I've always been passionate about making a positive impact in my community, and I've been involved in a variety of advocacy efforts throughout my life. Whether it's organizing peaceful protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in Atlanta or taking on leadership roles in organizations like Jack and Jill, I've always been driven by my outgoing personality and desire to make a difference. I believe that we can all be leaders in our own way, and I love encouraging others to step up and tackle challenges with confidence. From registering new voters to getting involved in political action, I'm always eager to help others make a meaningful impact. And even though I'm constantly growing and evolving, I'm committed to supporting and learning from my peers every step of the way.
